Arthritis Help
Arthritis affects over 20% of adults living in the Unites States. Most people consider it an older person’s affliction, but almost 2/3s of those suffering from it are under 65. There are several different types of arthritis, but the most common form is osteo-arthritis. This can be caused by gradual wear and tear of the joints, as well as by traumatic injury. Rheumatic arthritis, in its various forms is an auto-immune disorder with no cure.
It is important to get a correct diagnosis of which type of arthritis you have. Early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis may be helpful in keeping the disease from progressing rapidly.
There are some home remedies that may be helpful when dealing with the pain, stiffness and swelling of arthritis. These include cayenne, glucosamine & chondroitin, gotu kola and willow bark.
Cayenne has often been used as a topical remedy for arthritis, and it also may be very effective. After the sometimes intense burn of the spice wears off, the nerve endings have been deadened, and the pain signal to the brain is turned off.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin may have some efficacy with arthritis pain. The debate is on about how much it helps, as well as whether or not it can heal damage to the joints. One good point about this remedy; if you are allergic to shellfish, do not use the treatment. Diabetics should also use caution, as it may raise blood sugar levels.
Copper is a very popular remedy for arthritis, but the jury seems to be leaning towards the negative. Most studies show very little difference between copper and a placebo. If you want to wear copper, it might be advisable just to do so for the looks.
There are other topical remedies for arthritis that may have some value. Gotu Kola, willow bark and comfrey are often used for this purpose. The safety of topical comfrey is strongly debated. There is a chemical in that plant that may cause kidney and liver damage. Whether or not it is absorbed by the skin is not known. People who are sensitive to aspirin products should avoid willow, as the active principle could cause a reaction.
It is important to point out that any herbal remedies you decide to use should be shared with your doctor and pharmacist. Some herbs can cause problems with medications or make certain types of arthritis worse. This applies to all herbal remedies, not just those for arthritis.
